歌うこと、チェロを弾くこと、可愛いものを集めること、絵を描くこと。それから、素敵な服に、お菓子も大好き。ここにいるのは、そんな19歳の女の子だ。彼女の名前は、分島花音（わけしまかのん）。

「両親がとても音楽好きだったので、花音には生まれる前から音楽をやらせようと思ってたみたいです。それで、名前も音楽にちなんだカノン＝花音ってつけてくれました」

そうした御両親の勧めもあり、３歳からチェロを始めたという彼女は、成長と共により深く音楽の世界へと傾倒していった。思春期に入ると、クラシック 以外のポピュラーミュージックにも興味を持つように。そこで彼女が出会ったのが、歌を歌うことだ。程なく、彼女は作詞作曲にも取り組み出し、さらには “チェロを弾きながら歌う”という、斬新な独自様式を編み出すに至る。

そして、そんな分島花音という希有な存在に対して、このたび強い興味を持ったのが何と“あの”Mana。究極のアート集団と呼ばれたMALICE MIZERをリーダーとして率いていたばかりか、現在はゴシックロックプロジェクト・Moi dix Moisで、日本のみならず欧州を筆頭に海外でも熱い支持を受けている彼が、初めて女性アーティストのプロデュースを手掛けることを表明したのである。

「チェロを弾きながら歌っているその姿を見て、直感的に「これは…！」って思いましたね。僕はクラシックも音楽として非常に好きだったりするので、歌ってるだけじゃなく、チェロを弾いてるっていうところに、新しい未来を感じたんです」

そもそも、このManaという人は音楽的才能と並んで、洗練された審美眼を持った人物でもあり、近年は音楽活動の域を超え、服飾ブランドMoi- même-moitiéも主宰しているという背景がある。いわゆる世間でゴスロリと呼ばれているファションの概念を、言葉で“ゴシック＆ロリータ”として 世に提示し、いちはやく具現化してみせたのが他ならぬManaだったのだ。その後、このゴスロリ・ムーヴメントが、今や世界共通言語である「VISUAL -KEI」という音楽スタイルとあいまって、日本発のサブカルチャーとして広く浸透したことは言うまでもない。同時に、そのいずれもにおいてオーソリティ であるManaが各方面で絶対的カリスマ視されていることも、揺るがぬ事実と言える。

そんな、鬼才・Manaが分島花音に対して感じた可能性。それは、彼女が幼少からの英才教育で培われた絶対音感を持っていることや、唯一無比なチェロ＋歌というスタイルをとっていることだけに留まらず、実に多岐に渡るものだったらしい。

「音楽に関すること以外でも、ピンと来ることはありましたよ。まず、絵を描くことが好きだっていう点。僕も絵は凄く好きだし、実際に描いたものをみ せてもらっても、これがけっこう上手い。あとは、彼女のキャラクターも面白いと思いました。まだ10代のわりに、妙に落ち着いてるとこがある反面、してい る指輪なんかを見ると，そこにクッキーとか、お菓子の飾りがついてたりとかするんですよね(笑)。大人びた雰囲気とは逆に、まだまだ少女らしさを感じさせ る部分もあって、その両方を持っているところ。ここが、“彼女らしさ”だと感じさせられました」

こうしてManaが感じた、分島花音に対しての未知なる予感と、幾つかのイメージたち。それはやがて、今回のデビューシングル『still doll』の存在へと繋がっていった。なお、この曲は4月7日よりTX系TVアニメ『ヴァンパイア騎士』エンディングテーマとしても、絶賛オンエア中だ。
